5. what is death? to dust you will return

In death there is no communication, but only silence (Ps.31:17; 115:17). The dead that we read in the Bible are resurrected, such as Lazarus, the young man of Nain and the daughter of Jairus, are also silent about experiences they had in death, because the dead are not conscious.

Just imagine that these three who were resurrected by Jesus would have been with God in heaven. Then they would have had a lot to say. Initially perhaps about their indignation that they were suddenly back on earth from heavenly glory. But the Bible is silent about experiences in death. The dead are asleep and are not conscious of anything.

first time
After Adam and Eve have been tempted by the serpent and eaten the fruit forbidden by God from the tree of knowledge of good and evil, God speaks to the serpent about the consequences of his action. And we also find the so-called mother promise there. The woman would bring forth ‘seed’ (>offspring) that would crush the serpent’s head (Gen. 3:15). A prediction of the Messiah, who would overcome the adversary and death.

Man would die if he ate from the tree of knowledge of good and evil (Gen. 2:17) and a few verses further on it is explained what that is.

Genesis 3
18 In the sweat of your face you will eat bread, till you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken. For dust you are, and to dust you will return.

Ecclesiastes 3
20 everything goes to one place, everything is from dust, and everything returns to dust.

no longer (to be)
Death is not another form of life, no new beginning, but a return. A person was not there before his birth and is no longer there after his death. He has returned to the state in which he was, before he existed: he is no more.

Ecclesiastes 12
7 and the dust returns to the earth as it was, and the spirit returns to God who gave it.

back to square one
The dust, which is the material physical body, returns to the earth as it was, for man was taken from the dust. The spirit, which is the life force of man, returns to God. Man was formed from the dust of the ground and became a living soul, because God breathed into him the breath of life (Gen. 2:7). To that state a person returns at death. Death is not a continuation of life nor a new experience, but a state of non-being.

Psalm 39
14 Turn away your gaze from me, that I may rejoice, before I go and am no more.

Psalm 113
15 As for man, his days are like grass; as the blossom of the field, so he flourishes;
16 but when the wind passes over it, he is no more…
