What is life actually all about? Are there many things that are useful? Would we worry about anything and everything? Or are all those things just side issues? Useful in itself, but in the light of that one thing, only secondary issues.
When push comes to shove, only one thing is needed, Scripture says.
Luke 10
38 And it came to pass, as they were on the way, that he came into a village. And a woman named Martha received Him into her house.
39 And she had a sister named Mary, who also sat at Jesus’ feet and listened to His word.
40 But Martha was busy serving. When she came and stood by, she said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister leaves me alone to serve?” Just tell her to help me.
41 Jesus answered and said to her, Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things.
42 Only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen the good part, which will not be taken from her.
sat at rest
Mary listened to His word and sat at the Lord’s feet, representing rest. Martha was busy and working hard. With all kinds of useful things, you might say. Not so. The Lord tells her, “Only one thing is necessary.”
A nice reference to Psalm 27:4 which says:
Psalm 27
4 One thing have I desired of YAHWEH,
that’s what I’ll look for:
that I may dwell in the house of YAHWEH,
all the days of my life,
to behold the beauty of YAHWEH
and to examine in His temple.
His word
The house of YAHWEH, His temple was then the place where God’s Word was spoken. Spiritual truths were expressed there in words and images. That’s where we would be, in His word. That’s the one thing that’s needed.
Paul also focused on one thing:
Philippians 3
14 But one thing I do, forgetting what is behind, and reaching forward to what is ahead, I press toward the goal, the prize of the high call of God in Christ Jesus.
If we focus on that, we will receive the rest too, that is the promise.
Matthew 6
33 But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
Philippians 4
19 My God will supply all your needs according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.
