the shadow and the body

In Hebrews 10:1 the writer of Hebrews says that the law, the old covenant, has only a shadow of goods to come. The law pointed ahead to things that were yet to come. In one of Paul’s prison letters, the Colossians letter, Paul says something almost identical. This also concerns the law and its provisions:

Colossians 2
16 Therefore let no man judge you in meat, or in drink, or in feasts, or new moons, or sabbaths.
17 Which are a shadow of things to come, but the body is of Christ.

The provisions under the law are a shadow of things to come. What was still a future under the law has now been fulfilled. What they are foreshadows of, it also says: but the body is of the Christ. These provisions point forward to Christ and His body.

Anyone who sees a shadow knows that there must be more. A shadow points to light! Where under the law only the shadow was visible, visible contours and darkness in itself, the body of Christ is now reality. All provisions under the law point in some way to Christ and His body. All of God’s promises are fulfilled in Christ, in Christ and the ecclesia!
