the eighth temple

In an earlier blog I wrote about seven temples. A temple in the sense of a holy place or a sacred place. That is the place where God lives and has attached His name to. The tabernacle is also included (Ex.25:8) and of course the invisible temple, the ecclesia, the body of Christ (2 Cor.6:16). A notable reader pointed out to me that Scripture also implicitly speaks of an eighth temple.

new creation
Where seven is the number of fullness, eight represents a new series. This eighth “temple” is the new creation. The new creation will be full of His glory (Isa.6:3) and God will dwell in His creation. It is said of the new heaven and earth:

Revelation 21
1 And I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away. And the sea was no more.
2 And I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, which is from God, coming down out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.
3 And I heard a great voice from heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people, and God Himself shall be with them.
(…)
22 And I saw no temple in her: for the Lord God Almighty is her temple, and the Lamb.
