Christ Jesus, who destroys death

1 Corinthians 15 is by far the most extensive exposition on resurrection in Scripture. It is amazing how Paul powerfully sets out here that the gospel is universal and truly encompasses all people: “for just as in Adam all die, so also in Christ all will be made alive” (:22). It is only at that point when the last enemy, death, has been destroyed (:26).

new life
The life Paul speaks of in verse 22 is not what we call life here, for that has death before it and is therefore actually a slow dying. No, it is the life of the Firstfruits, Christ (:20). He has death behind Him (Rom. 6:9) and is the First to have received this imperishable life. The rest follows, but in a specific order (:23-24). In another passage, Paul also speaks of the destruction of death, and there too he makes clear how God does this.

2 Timothy 1
10 (…) our Savior, Christ Jesus, who abolishes death and brings life and immortality to light through the gospel.

death destroyed!
The word translated here as “to abolishe” means: to annihilate, to destroy, to render inoperative. Christ Jesus abolishes death. That is the case when death is dismantled and is no longer active. When every mortal who has ever entered death has been made alive in immortality, death is destroyed. Hence it says: “who renders death inoperative and brings life and immortality to light”.

immortal LIFE
Paul uses a well-known figure of speech here called a hendiadys. This refers to a concept by using two nouns, instead of an adjective with a noun. Life and immortality is the same as: immortal life. When death is abolished, every creature receives immortal life. Life triumphs over death and the victory of Christ Jesus will be complete!
