he will begin to deliver Israel…

Samson is said to have begun to deliver Israel from the hand of the Philistines (Judg. 13:5). It was only much later that King David achieved the final victory over this enemy (2 Sam.3:18). But the true deliverance of Israel lies in the future and will be accomplished through Christ. David, the king who subdued the enemy, is a type of this.

First Coming
But what does Samson speak of? He is a picture of Jesus in His first coming. In His first coming, Jesus began the deliverance through His death and resurrection and will complete this deliverance at His second coming. Thus, Samson began to deliver Israel from the hand of the Philistines. Samson was humbled, and his long hair speaks of this. He did not drink wine, a picture of new life. Samson had no part in this, because he is only a type of Jesus in His first coming. That coming was in humiliation and was a path that led to His death.

Hidden
The entire story of Samson speaks of Him in whom God reveals all His power. From his birth, announced by an angel to his mother and later to his father (cf. Luke 1:31, Matt. 1:20-21), to his death. Everything speaks of Jesus the Nazarene. Samson was born a Nazarite. Like Jesus, he was betrayed in the house of the one he loved (Zech. 13:6) and handed over to his enemies. Samson also achieved the greatest victory in his death.

Of course, these are hidden matters. They are mysteries that we find beneath the surface, and that is why we should search the Scriptures. So that we may learn to understand the riddle of Samson!
