That Genesis is a special book hardly needs explanation. When we read it, it takes us to a primeval time, which we can hardly imagine. Consider the events in the Garden of Eden, where we find the beginning of humanity: just two people and the serpent (Genesis 3). But the flood (Genesis 7-8) and the reason for it with the sons of God (Genesis 6) also make great demands on our imagination. The writing style of the book is simple and concise and therefore somewhat mysterious. There are many questions to be raised that are not answered in Genesis.
a simple report
Genesis is simply an account of the beginning of creation and of the world of the beginning (2 Peter 2:5), as the period before the flood is called, and the time afterward. God speaks and reports His works through the writers and this ignores all the ifs and buts of people. The beginning of Genesis and therefore the beginning of the entire Scripture is striking.
Genesis 1
1 In (the) beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
God!
How illuminating this simple statement is! God created heavens and earth! This is in contrast to just about every “modern” philosophy of life. There is one God and He is the Creator. Scripture does not defend itself against philosophies such as the theory of evolution, atheism, polytheism, Buddhism, etc., but completely ignores them and with this one statement sweeps aside all human doctrines.
elementary
The Hebrew word for God is Elohim and that is a linguistic plural, but it speaks of one Someone, because it then says that God created (singular). There is one God (Deut.6:4; Mark 12:29; 1 Cor.8:6) and He is the Creator and Author of all (Isa.45:6-7; Eph.3:9). Scripture therefore begins with this fundamental statement that is truly solid ground to stand on. This grand beginning also determines the guaranteed happy ending of everything. He does not forsake the works of His hands (Ps.138:8).
Isaiah 46
10 I, who from the beginning declare the outcome, and from ancient times things that have not yet come to pass; who says, My counsel will be accomplished, and I will do all that I desire.
